Analysing a television Advertisement in detail

Task three:

There are many different styles of advert being produced for large organisations everyday that have different scales of hilarity, fear, and even parody styles.

This advert is an example of a humorous advert that attracts people attention and makes people slightly disturbed in some aspects, this advert is a production by the well known chocolate brand Cadbury and is based on these two children in the way they position and move there eyebrows to the beat of the song playing in the background. This advert is targeted at children as it is demonstrating to children an eyebrow movement while looking into many different cameras. This advert gives the emotions of shock and humour as it is something that children wouldn't really do, this advert capture a viewers attention as it has nothing to do with the product itself and would make all viewers confused. The children are showing an aspect of the product as they are wearing the product colours, this means that it is using brand identity as it contains the colours that are associated with the product. This advert has encouraged many people to start making videos using the same techniques of movement of the eyebrows. This advert does not use celebrity endorsement as it does not contain a celebrity but just plain children. Many programmes have incorporated this eyebrow movement into there episodes where by it will amuse there audience. The setting in this is just a grey screen it is simple as it is trying to focus on the children in the advert, the lighting is quite bright but is also very dime and the logo is used at the end of the advert to give people an idea of what the advert is about. This advert does not have a story but does show two children doing an everyday thing as they are getting there photos taken. The characters in the advert are the children and they are just being themselves so they are not really playing  a character. This advert is effective as it would have confused the viewer and would allow them to interpret their own reasons for why they would be doing this in the advert.

The camera shots that are used in this advert include, mid-shots, long-shots, close ups, extreme close ups and zooming shot. Mid-shots are used in this advert to show both of the characters and to show what everybody is doing throughout the advertisement. Long-shots are used in this advertisement are used to show what is going on in the whole of the advert and what is happening around these people as well as what these people are doing. Close ups are used to focus on a specific person in the video as they use them to show what a certain person is doing. Finally extreme close ups in this advert are used in this case when the camera is focusing in on a watch this makes the watch seem important to the advertisement. The camera angles that are used in this are mostly high angles these are used as a way to make the advert more interesting, and this adds humour within the advertisement. Editing is used in this advert to add in an image of the product and the slogan that is used in all of the adverts produced for this product and to create a faster speed when the eyebrows are moving. Sound and Music are used in the advert for the beat that the children are moving there eyebrows in follows on with the beat of the music that is playing in the background, this makes the video stranger as it capture the way and speed that the children are moving there eyebrows. The company does not use special effects in this video as it is all done by the children's movement and does not need any special effects.

style of television advertisements

Task Two:

most adverts are targeted to a particular type of audience, people make adverts to appeal to these people. For example some of these adverts are targeted to men and women individually.

  • Humour
  • Parody
  • Shock
  •  Surrealism
  •  Intertexuality
  •  Repetition
  • Sex Appeal
  •  Famous faces

An example of a humorous advert is 'M&M advert' this is a funny advert because it shows a talking M&M arguing with a man about getting into a bowl. This adverts appeals to everyone as it is funny, but it mainly appeals to young people as they are the people that would generally eat M&M's. This makes the advert memorable as it is unrealistic and is something that would stay in your head. This is a appropriate advert as it is not meant to be serious, and this is successful as many people buy this product and it is memorable. This advert was effective as it used the product throughout the advert as a way of showing them in a real environment of someones home.

An example of a parody advert would be 'DAZ advert' this is appealing to older people as they mainly watch soaps. It is memorable as it shows famous soap stars and is funny in some aspects as it mocks these television shows. This advert is appropriate as it is as both of these appeal to older people that would mainly use soap powder and watch soaps, this advert is also successful as it is memorable to older people and when people buy this product they will remember this advert. This advert was effective in appealing to the target audience as it used a setting that the audience would have understood  to show the product and demonstrate how good the product is.

An example of a shock advert is 'The Brooke charity' this is a shock advert as it shows that the donkeys are treated unfairly and it is something you wouldn't see in most country. This is appealing to children mostly as if a child told there parent to do something they probably would to try and save the animals. This is an appropriate video as it is trying to show people how the animals are treated in other countries, and this is successful as it will make people feel bad if they do not give money to save the animals. This advert is effective as it used a sense of shock to appeal to there audience and to show them what they can do to help this organisation.

An example of a surrealism advert is the 'Pepsi' advert this is a surrealism advert as it shows time freezing, this may make the audience slightly confused as the actors in the advert are and this would make them curious as to what would happen next. The advert is memorable as it has a famous face in it 'Nicki Minaj' and it is something that no other person would think of doing. This style of advert is appropriate for the brand that it is selling as it is not reality and encourages people to buy the product. This advert is successful as it is something that no one would forget due to the fact that it is a surreal advert. This advert is not effective as the product had nothing to do with the advert itself, but was also effective as it used a famous star to appeal to a certain audience.

An example of an intertextuality advert is the 'Cravendale' advert as it is something that has already been used in a big film, this will make the audience think about the film and think about what they may be using this advert to do. This advert is memorable as it is not something that you would normally see as it shows cats clicking and that is not something they are able to do. The style of advert is appropriate as it is showing that cats are able to do a lot more than what they are portrayed like in life. This advert was successful because it was something that would stick in peoples minds if they were to buy the product. This advert is effective as it almost became like a short film as a way of showing the surrealism of the product and would confuse people by making them feel like they would want to see what would happen if they did buy this product.

An example of a repetition advert is the 'Churchill' advert as it is repeats the slogans and the style of the adverts. This advert makes the audience feel as though it is a good deal and this is something that would also stick into the audiences minds. This is a memorable advert as it shows a talking bobble headed dog and has been around for a long time so people from the older generation would remember it as well and would tell people about it. The style of advert is appropriate as it is something that people would be able to tell others, this advert is also successful as where it has been around for years it has brought in many customers. This advert is an effective advert as it uses strange circumstances that would happen to a human to be associated with the product and the appealing part of the product.

An example of a sex appeal advert is the 'Lynx' commercial as this particular one show flight attendants doing whatever men wanted on the plane. This advert is appealing to men as most men would love a women to do whatever they want. The advert is memorable as men will remember it due to the fact that it shows these women and men would get sex appeal out of this advert. This style of advert is appropriate as it is aimed at men and persuading men to buy the product. This advert is effective as the product they are advertising is associated with men and the product advert would appeal to the mind of a man.

An example of a famous face advert is the 'Neutrogena' advert as it shows the famous star Hayden Panettiere the famous star from 'Heroes' the TV show. This advert is appealing to women as it show that every women gets spot including celebrates and that people should not be embarrassed and it is natural, it is also a good advert as it has a celebrity in it people will think that if it works for her it will work for them. This advert is memorable because it has a celebrity in it. The style of advert is appropriate as it is persuading women to buy this product. This advert is effective as it shows that the product can work for anyone and would appeal to people if it worked for someone famous.

Forms of television advertising

Welcome to 'An introduction to advertising'. This is a blog that is designed to give people all the information that they need to know to be able to be successful in the world of advertising. These details will provide you with the details of:

  • Different formats of advertising
  • Different purposes of advertising
  • Examples of effective/ineffective advertising campaigns
  • Examples of controversial advertising campaigns
  • Different styles of television advertisements
  • How television adverts are researched and designed
  • How television adverts are produced
  • Common Codes and Conventions
  • How advertising is regulated.
In a realistic advert they will use things that happen in everyday life to show the affects of something within an advertisement. They will try and make the advert look as simple as possible. An example of a realistic advert is the 'fairy liquid' advert as it shows the audience that fairy liquid lasts a long time and you hardly ever have to buy it. Also as it is a realistic advert it will make the audience believe that it is true what they are saying in the advert. A disadvantage to this advert would be that they only show that it lasts a while they do not show if it is a good product or not. The advert was effective because it had a clear goal of selling the product as it demonstrated that this product has been around for a long time and is long lasting.

An anti-realistic advertisement will try to make the advert as strange as possible as they are trying to make the advertisement appeal and interest all of the audience. This will make the advertisement memorable. An example of a anti-realistic advert is the 'rubberduckzilla' advert as its is not something that would really happen, but doing this makes the audience interested in the product as it is advertised in a strange way. The negative thing about this advert is that it would not actually happen and that it is showing force advertisement when it shows the giant duck. The actual product in this advert was only highlighted once and was weighed down by the story of the advert.

In an animated advertisement they are able to do much more than what realistic advertisements are able to do as they use there editing skills as a way of making the advertisement memorable. An animated advert is the 'Flora' advert as it shows that it is suitable for children to use and it is interesting for children to watch as it is a animation. This is also an advert that would stick into the back of your mind. A negative thing about this advert is that it displays a joke that children would not understand due to the fact that it is aimed at adults and is a very impersonal joke to use, it is also adult humour. The product appealed to the target audience as it demonstrated that the product was easy for children to use, but also did not as some parents may have found it inappropriate for children to watch.

In a documentary advertisement they will use facts and figures, this will appeal to there target audience as they will want to know some information. An example of s documentary advert is the 'Calgon' advert as it shows that many people have washing machine limescale and that it does not mean you have to get a new washing machine when you have a limescale problem. It also shows that they did testing to prove that there product works and they did a demonstration to prove this. The negative thing about this advert is that they over exaggerate the product. This advert was effective as it used numbers and statistics to demonstrate the amount that the product is reliable, but could have been confusing to people who did not understand what they were talking about.

In a talking heads video they will try and incorporate the product with the star in the advertisement, this will make the product more appealing to people who are fans of the star. A talking heads advert would be the 'H&M' advert as it shows David Beckhams underwear line is being sold there. This advert is appealing to women as it shows David Beckham chasing after a car that has his dressing gown in it. It is appealing as he t-shirt comes off. The negative thing about this advert is that he would not actaully chase his dressing gown down the street. This advert was effective in appealing to its target audience as it used a famous face as a way of appealing to women with husbands so that they would buy this product for them.

In a stand alone advert they try to make the advertisement as memorable as possible as the advertisement is the only one of its kind. An example of a stand alone advert is 'barclays' advert as it shows an elderly man recieves a text message showing that his grandchild has been born and he starts running through the street to get to the hospital, he turns into someone young and then gets older as he walks through the door, there is also another advert containing a man going down a water slid this is appealing as well as it is funny to watch and is unrealistic. This advert is good as it shows that in barclays it is quick and easy to pay for something. The negative thing about this advert is that he would not actually get any younger. This advert made effective use of computer graphics. The computer graphics had the effect of life being easier if you were with this particular bank.

In a series advert the company will try to change what happens in the different advertisements and will try to develop them to make them more interesting, as they do not want to make them all similar. This may bore the viewers.  The 'Compare the Meerkat' advert is a series advert as it is the kind of advert that would annoy someone some much they would not forget it. The good thing about this advert is that you are able to use both websites to get what you want. Irronically the negative thing about it is the postive thing about it as it is a memorable advert. Another example of a series advert is 'Go Compare' as it is a good way for people to get discounts and its is a good website to use. The negative thing about this is that it is very irritating and the song is one that you would not forget. The final example is the 'Hamlet' advert, this is an advert targeted to men and uses funny ways of advertising these in the adverts, they use this funny approach as smoking is serious and not funny. The bad thing about these adverts is that they annoy you and then stick in to your head as they use the similar sorts of things. These adverts are effective as they use the real website and this website to make their product available on both these websites if people do happen to get the two mixed up.
